Seeing is Believing
When I was a young girl in Germany, my babysitter, who was also my neighbor, said something to me that affected me for many years. Too many years actually.
I must have been about 5-years old. And no, I do not recall many conversations I was having back at that age, but I remember this one very clearly because of the effect it had on me.
We were talking about God, and I asked my babysitter if she believed in God. I was not raised religiously (my mom was Protestant Christian and my dad was Muslim).
Her answer:
I only believe what I see
seemed plausible. So plausible in fact that I stuck with this belief for a very long time. It was almost as if I didn’t give myself permission to not be rational and pragmatic about anything.
But, as I grew up I realized how it actually limited me. Today, I even think it not only limited me but also hurt me inside. Favoring rationalism prevented me from opening myself up to so many more possibilities. In fact, when I reflected back on this conversation, I got angry at myself for having believed her. I do not know why it took me a long time to dismantle this idea.
And because her answer rang in my head for some time and reflected so many people around me, I also had a bit of shame about wanting to believe in anything that was beyond me, and in fact, much bigger than what our human minds can grasp.
I clearly became spiritual over time, and today I work with energy, so I released that idea. But for the longest time, I am guessing a good dozen years or so, I prided myself in being rational. I was probably also afraid of being scrutinized and just wanted to be normal and accepted and please people, even at my own expense.
Can Skeptics Still Receive Reiki?
Sometimes I get asked if you have to believe in reiki or energy work to be able to benefit from it. The truth is, you do not. Believing has nothing to do with receiving the healing energy.
However, I would recommend not approaching energy work with an analytical mind but with your intuitive mind. And while being critical about who you work with and having questions about energy work is totally fine, do not scrutinize it too much before trying it with an open mind.
In fact, there are so many things that we don’t see or not know how they work but we do not question them or feel the need to pick them apart before accepting them:
electricity
love
& other emotions
flying [airplanes lift]
radio waves
microwaves
atoms
air
UVA/B rays
medicines and drugs
the effect of colors
auras
In my opinion, the Aquarian age is going to be more and more about this energetic unseen realm, and I do think the concept of energy work is going to be even bigger. Last, I do think energy work shouldn’t be upheld to higher standards than other common things.
And, remember, science is behind concepts that exist, so putting conscious effort into opening our intuitive minds is beneficial, and can open up a whole new world to us.
